The Story

James Dixon founded the firm in 1806 manufacturing Britannia metal wares. In 1811 James Dixon took on a partner in the firm and it became Dixon & Smith. In 1822 the company moved to Cornish Place and became Dixon & Son, becoming Dixon & Sons in 1835. In 1879 the famous trumpet and banner mark was granted. In the 1920’s the firm also began to produce cutlery under the Staybrite and Firth names. In 1930 J Dixon & Sons absorbed the firm William Hutton & Sons Ltd. of Sheffield. The firm continued as a family run enterprise until 1976, but ceased production in the 1980’s and closed permanently in 1992. British Silverware Limited has possession of the Dixon brand name today.

This particular design was first produced by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield as pewter ware during the 1900’s and was then replaced by silver plate EPBM (Electro Plated Britannia Metal) between 1910 and the 1920’s. The item is a silver plated coffee pot, which stands on a short trumpet shaped base and has been fitted with a peaked spout and silver plated scroll handle with a plume motif at the handle top. The coffee pot has a rolled rim and base for strength and a hinged and domed lid with a ball finial above the lid. The body of the pot is decorated with a pair of embossed linear bands depicting the feathers edge design.

The coffee pot is stamped underneath with the trumpet and banner mark followed by JD & S EP BM E756 3.

The pot has seen some use and there are two small dents on the lower part of the body (not really visible unless you look closely). The pot will also require a decent polish to get it to its former glory. Aside from this, it is in good usable condition considering the age.

Height of handle: 22 cm, Height of spout: 20.8 cm, Height with lid finial: 23 cm, Height of rim: 19.4 cm, Diameter of base: 8.4 cm, Diameter of rim: 7.5 cm, Spout to handle: 17.4 cm
